If you are thinking about becoming a post-primary teacher now is the time to start putting your application together for the Professional Masters in Education (PME). This is a two-year Masters programme.
The majority of applications are made through PAC – the Postgraduate Applications Centre. This is where you can apply to the following universities:
- University College Dublin (UCD)
- University College Cork (UCC)
- NUI Galway
- NUI Maynooth
- Dublin City University (DCU)
The closing dates for these applications are 1st December 2014 with late applications accepted (at an additional fee) until 30th January 2015 to start in September 2015.
Hibernia College also offers the PME with closing dates of 28th November 2014 and January 2015 for late applications. The starting date is March 2015.
You can find the subject requirements for entry on the Teaching Council website. There are additional points given to applicants who have relevant professional experience or hold additional qualifications. And there’s more information about getting into teaching on gradireland.com.
The Teaching Council has also provided answers to some commonly asked questions about applying to the PME.
Studying in UCD
The PME at UCD is a two-year full-time programme leading to the award of Professional Master of Education (PME) and qualifies graduates to teach two subjects at post-primary level (both junior and senior cycle). Take a look at their brochure for more information.
If accepted, each student will be required to arrange a suitable placement school for the duration of the programme. Schools are sourced once you have been accepted to the programme (April 2015). UCD does provide students with a list of suggested schools, however, students must still undergo a competitive interview process with any suggested school.
