So, let’s go to Japan…

Two students walk into a bar…

“So, I was thinking of doing the JET Programme… “

“The what?”

“The JET Programme: a cultural exchange and foreign language education programme to Japan. Look…”

“That’s a sad website…”

“Yeah, it’s a bit old looking but the info’s good. And here’s a blog from a guy who went in 2011 “Yer Man in Japan:  The misadventures of an Irishman on the JET Programme

“Oh, he’s written a lot, hasn’t he?  I like this one: Pimping for JET back Home. But I don’t want to be a teacher…”

“I don’t want to be a teacher either, but it’s more than that – it’s cultural exchange stuff…”

“Cultural exchange?  What’s that?”

“Sport, dance, music, literature, anything… The idea is that you transmit what life is like in Ireland and expand students’ horizons.”

“So, I have to teach them Irish dancing?!”

“If you want. They’re mad about Riverdance and love ANÚNA. But you can do anything you like, it’s all about expanding horizons and connecting with people.”

“How about my horizons – what do I get out of all this?”

“Well, a chance to live in Japan for a year or more. Experience culture-shock. Meet people from all over the English-speaking world – as well as Japan, of course. Explore a very different culture and country. Have a stab at a new language. Take yourself out of your comfort zone. Backpack through South-East Asia if you want. The programme really turns some of your ideas of the world on its head and gives you new perspectives.”

“Do many UCD grads go on this programme?”

“Well for 2015/16 11 of the 47 Irish JETs are from UCD.”

“Hmmm, I’ll think about it.”

“Yeah, you should, you really should…”
