Networking – Getting the Mostest from a Recruitment Fair

Mark Cumisky, Career & Skills Consultant at UCD, gives some advice on the best way to tackle a recruitment fair:


Students chatting to employers

Recruitment Fairs are great. They are full of interesting people, often wearing primary colours, who are trying to give you free stuff. Pens, writing pads, chocolate, stress-balls, travel coffee mugs, lollipops, key-rings, tee-shirts, even hoodies on occasion. You will not have to buy a pen all year – truly a cornucopia of freebies! Oh, and they are looking to hire you either as a graduate or for a summer internship next year. Pretty cool!

But the place is packed, jam-packed. With other students. And the layout feels non-intuitive. The staff at the stands look like they’re fed up explaining who their organisation is for the umpteenth time. And they do this at almost every university (and lots of ITs). So, is it worthwhile to go? Can I really make myself stand out and impress them?
YES! YES, really.
How?

  • Login to Careers Connect with your UCD Connect details and find the fair under events to see a list of the organisations who will be attending. You can then note down the ones that you want to approach, aka the ones you want to work for, and make a list.
  • Use the web and research the organisations in detail – check out the careers section of their website, esp. the part on the role that you want, and also their general corporate site.
  • Use sites like gradireland, Prospects, and Vault to research the profession and learn what’s involved in the roles you want.
  • Make a list of questions that you want answered – not those that you can answer from their website, obvs.
  • Develop a pitch about yourself – why you want to work for them, why you are studying your course, where you see yourself going in the future. An elevator pitch that tells potential employers both who you are and what you can do for them.
  • Talk to a career and skills consultant before the fair, book an appointment and discuss your strategy.
  • Smile and relax. Hard, I know, but remember that the employers are here to see you – that’s why they came, they want this conversation, and the better the conversation the more impressed they’ll be with you.
  • Follow-up. Send a thank you note or a copy of your CV afterwards – whatever you promised, do it.
  • And enjoy – at the very least the pens are useful.

Jobbio is an app developed by an Irish company that allows you to apply for jobs at the click of button. You simply establish a profile in which you describe your work history. Search for jobs wherever you are and simply apply.

Sidekick

Sidekick is designed for a browser. It attaches a tracker to an email and it will tell you the exact time when an email is opened, anytime the email is opened sidekick will send you a notification. You can also use it to schedule emails.
This is a great resource for seeing which employers have read your emails and which ones haven’t.

Linked

LinkedIn’s App is very good for keeping up to date with all of the latest activity on LinkedIn. Network with new business associates shortly after meeting them- find new people in your network- follows groups and apply for jobs at the click of button.

Indeed.com mobile Phone App allows you to apply for jobs, just upload your CV and you can apply for jobs at the click of a button.

Glassdoor

The Glassdoor lets you look at reviews of companies and get some insider information. This can be of use before you go into the interview because it allows users to share information about their experiences of what it’s like to work in a particular company. Previous interviewees also post about their experiences so this can help you in your preparation.

Aduza

Adzuna can inform you of jobs in the UK. It also has a CV evaluator which uses multiple algorithms in order to determine the quality of a CV and how much you’re worth a year in real terms. It also gives you the opportunity to email the figure to your boss (for the truly daring).

Paid Internship – Conflict Resolution Unit

As set out in the Programme for Government, the Government is committed to developing

Irish engagement in international conflict resolution as an important dimension of Irish

foreign policy. This internship is designed to provide the individual selected with the

opportunity to gain practical experience in policy development and in the work of the

Conflict Resolution Unit of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The internship will

be for a maximum duration of 11 months, commencing on Monday 14 September 2015.

Qualifications/Experience:

 A first or second class honours degree is required, preferably in International Relations,

History, Politics or related discipline

 A strong interest in conflict resolution is desirable, as demonstrated by previous work

experience in this area, specialised studies or academic training

 A postgraduate degree with a focus on conflict resolution and/or peace and security

studies is desirable

 High level of oral and written communication skills are essential

LM ERICSSON in association with the ICT Ireland Federation is offering a one year, full-time Masters in Applied Software Technology which will be free to participants and include a three month paid internship with the company and a full-time permanent job as a software engineer in Ericsson on satisfactory completion.

The Masters is delivered both in the Dublin Institute of Technology and Athlone Institute of Technology. It offers an integrated approach to delivering end to end software development skills. From computing fundamentals and software design to implementation and testing, the entire lifecycle of software development is covered. The programme focuses on the practical problem-solving skills required for software engineering. Programme participants will also gain an integrated and critical knowledge of the skills and particular technologies used in ICT product development today.

Screening and selection of candidates will take place during the Spring-Summer with the programme starting in September 2015.

Eligibility
The programme is geared primarily to unemployed graduates who are Irish or EEA nationals. Participants will not be entitled to retain any social welfare payments while attending the course but Ericsson is funding a Bursary to assist participants with expenses. Candidates should preferably have at a 2.1 Honours Primary Degree in a relevant cognate discipline. This category includes (but is not limited to) Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Data Networking etc. but qualified applicants from any discipline with significant content in Maths, Problem Solving, Logic and Critical Thinking will receive consideration.

Each application will be considered on its individual merits. Candidates will undertake a course in advance of commencing the Masters to prepare and qualify them in the range of subject areas to be covered on the Masters programme. This course in the Fundamentals of Computer Programming (FCP) will lead to a Certificate in Software Engineering.

Have you got the vital ingredient? – Jameson wants you!

James Atkinson graduated with a B Comm from the UCD Lochlann Quinn School of Business in 2012. In his final year at UCD, he had several career paths available to him. Accounting seemed a popular route with solid prospects; but James looked for something a bit more creative, stimulating and challenging.

“When a friend sent me the link to THE VITAL INGREDIENT website, I thought I had finally found a job that suited me perfectly. Jameson look for self-starters, graduates who are independent and ambitious, not afraid to take on a challenge and run with it.

So within a few months I had made my application video, highlighting my college society involvement, previous jobs and relevant academic achievements. Two tough assessment centres later I got an email offering me the job and so my incredible journey began with a position as Jameson Brand Ambassador in Poland.

My year in Poland was the time of my life: driving to Warsaw, Krakow and Wroclaw, running tasting sessions in bars, organising events, bartender advocacy programs, trade marketing and PR support. My role involved working on the brand plans and their execution. After one year, I had learned a lot and I indicated an interest to move on to another challenge. The team responded and offered me a position as the first Jameson Brand Ambassador in Thailand.

September 2013 I landed in Bangkok to continue my work building the Jameson brand. A new team, language, culture and a big challenge that requires a big can do attitude. I got to work seeding the brand, finding sampling opportunities and building relationships with key Thai bar owners and influencers. I’m entering my third year on the Jameson International Brand Ambassador Programme now and my second year in Bangkok. Things are going great. In both Poland and Thailand I drew a lot from my modules in International Marketing and Cross-Cultural Management: working in multi-cultural teams and learning how to proceed efficiently while maintaining a good rapport with customers and colleagues.

Where did you hear about The InterTradeIreland Graduate Programme?
I came across the Inter TradeIreland Graduate programme when I started my job search on gradireland. The challenge of working in a small to medium enterprise (SME) that often pursue novel ideas and aim to commercialize the idea really appealed to my ambitions.

Zinc Software was co-founded by its current CEO, Darran Hughes. The company has pioneered the effort in making the world’s first sensor for the mind and body. The flagship product “Lumafit” is to be released in autumn 2014.

I have been involved in core DSP research and algorithm development for motion tracking and assessment applications using the Lumafit sensor. The experience I have gained to date will no doubt benefit my future career progression. The most useful aspects have been the brainstorming sessions with colleagues thereby enabling a smooth transition from academic life to working on the company projects.

The academic support which forms part of the Inter TradeIreland Graduate Programme was very helpful in relation to the validation of the current product. The regular meetings between the company and academic supervisor results in a better understanding of the task at hand and provides me with a great support network.

The fully funded Postgraduate Diploma in Business and Management from QUB is very well structured. The best aspect is the interactive nature of the classes that allows hands-on learning. Coming from a Computer Science background, I found the course very useful in understanding the day to day running of the company.

Any other thoughts or advice for other graduate job seekers?
Don’t give up – there are lots of options out there. Apply for the jobs that suit your skill set, interests and your studies, and keep working on your strong points.

CareerFest - Thursday 15th May 2014

Session One: Identify your strengths!

10am-12pm, Building 71 (old student bar)

Are you trying to figure out what to do next? Are you unsure about what you have to offer a potential employer? This workshop helps you to build self-awareness through exploring your interests, values and personality preferences. Understanding yourself better can help you to evaluate career options more effectively and make choices that are right for you. You will also be better able to market your strengths in your CV and applications. Participants on this workshop will be asked to complete some psychometric tests in advance. These will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. Details will be provided when you register.


Session Two: Developing CVs that stand out

1-3pm, Building 71 (old student bar)

In this interactive workshop you will get to experience the graduate selection process from the perspective of a graduate recruiter. You will review graduate CVs and decide which candidate is the best fit for a role. This gives a unique insight into what graduate recruiters are looking for in an applicant’s CV. You will learn how to present your skills, knowledge and experience to best effect in your CV and avoid common CV pitfalls.


Design, Develop and Deliver Compelling Presentations

3-5pm, Building 71 (old student bar)

It is becoming more common for employers to ask candidates to create a presentation as part of the graduate recruitment process. Delivering presentations to colleagues, managers and customers is also a feature of many graduate jobs. This workshop will cover the development and delivery of professional presentations, including how to make a positive impact through verbal and non-verbal communication, in addition to highlighting the effective techniques that the world’s best presenters employ.


Ace Your Interview: A Strategy for Success

3-5pm, A109 Newman Building

In this interactive workshop we take you through what you should do before, during and after your interview to maximise your chance of success and help you to become more confident in your own capabilities. You will also get the chance to put what you have learned into action with practice interview scenarios.
