UCD Students Sweep the Board in IAESTE awards

IAESTE awards - UCD students

IAESTE awards - UCD studentsWith UCD students occupying 7 of 8 finalist places at last night’s IAESTE Ireland Trainee of the Year, it was always a possibility that UCD would take all three top positions and that’s exactly what happened at Wood Quay Venue, Dublin on 20 October 2014.

IAESTE awards - Naimh O'BrienFirst place and a prize of €300 went to Niamh O’Brien, a second year student of Electronic and Electrical Engineering. Second place and a cheque for €200 went to Camille O’Malley, a fourth year student of Chemistry, and third place and a prize of €100 went to Jennifer Holian, a fourth year student of Chemical Engineering.

This is the first time in recent years that UCD students have swept the board at this annual event and the third year running that the top prize has gone to a UCD student. Students were assessed on presentations that clearly demonstrated tangible internship outcomes such as personal and professional development, integration into a new country, society and workplace.

The judges were Ms Charis Hughes, Communications Officer, Leargas (Chair), Dr David Foster, UCD Director of Career Development and Skills and Ms Sandra Kavanagh, Faculty of Mathematics, Engineering and Science, Trinity College Dublin.

IAESTE (International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience) was founded in 1948 by Imperial College London, arriving in Ireland during 1962. Since its foundation, IAESTE has exchanged 340,000 interns in Science, Engineering, Architecture and IT, including 2400 Irish students who have undertaken internships across 87 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas and Oceania. Internships generally last for about 12 weeks but can last for up to one year and are open to undergraduate, graduate students and those already graduated. IAESTE Ireland is managed by the National Agency, Leargas and funded by the Department of Education and Skills.
